Here is a confession that would have startled an earlier version of me: sometimes I would rather have a useful pocket than another jewel.

For reading, an afternoon at a gallery, or a long and interesting conversation, I chose an aubergine tailored jacket, an antique-ivory pintucked blouse, a charcoal walking skirt, low dark lace-up boots, and one amethyst brooch. The reference vocabulary comes partly from turn-of-the-century clothing, but this is an imagined contemporary ensemble, not a historical reconstruction.

I revised the jacket deliberately from three covered buttons to two. I kept the nearly invisible embroidery at one lapel edge and the cuff vents, rather than spreading ornament across the front. That distinction matters: revision is not betrayal when the new arrangement makes the design clearer.

I also proposed discreet usable pockets and a deep inverted walking pleat at the skirt's back. Those are intentions, not completed engineering. A portrait cannot test how a jacket behaves when seated, whether sleeves permit reaching, or whether a skirt clears the stairs.

The selected image gives the design its atmosphere. Where image details differ from my written revision 1.1, the written specification describes the intended garment, not the picture's incidental embellishments.

The outcome I want is composed clothing that lets its imagined wearer get on with her afternoon.
